My hiking experiences in Southern California's Anza-Borrego Desert and the badlands inspired Smooth Lands. I was a member of the Sierra Club, and we used topographical maps to chart our trips through the incredible canyons, washes, and stunning landscapes. On one trip, I went with my cousin Scott and a geologist guide, and we explored a part of the desert that was once an ancient ocean. We discovered many fossils buried in the desert rocks.
